Neighbor Broke Durango

don't see many people on the paved road, seen my neighbors '04 Durango setting on the side of the road, then seen him walking.

He did a radiator swap and the only thing he replaced was the radiator
the top hose blew apart, it's a funky looking hose with an integrated fill cap
anyway it blew apart and according to him he did not notice anything, other than the fact it just quit running
I think he ran it a long way with no water just to get home

so I tow him home and we look it over

no water
no water in the oil
cranks, but there is a lot of clicking, clacking coming from what sounds like the top end
not a rod knocking

it's the 4.something engine

any ideas ???

I can't think what I'm hearing other than something bad on the valve train
but I can't figuer out what heat would to it
acts like it broke something attached to a valve
sounds like a cylinder or 2 ain't working

head gasket i know no water in the oil but still possible

JSoko June 22nd, 2015 07:57 AM

He's pulling the valve covers
I'm leaning toward something wrong with the cam or rockers

I just don't see how the heat would cause that but with aluminum ya just never know

now he's using this as an excuse to buy a Hummer
he's 40 and is going to borrow from his 401k
I told him he would end up paying the IRS 2x if not 3x the tax on the money he gets from his IRA.
I just don't know what people are thinking, he's an engineer at the TOYO Plant, he's smart but don't have any common sense

he's just gonna let the Durango sit cause he may can use the trans and other stuff in his Dodge farm truck it's the same engine and trans according to him
I told him it will just be another place for the mice to lay up

I think some beer and a few friends we can get them heads off on a Saturday
Damn hot down here upper 90's no breeze 80% humidity

I think the radiator hose may have some kind of leak.

My recent experience with valve area noise was this stupid 5.4 had a baffle epoxied to the inside of the valve cover. Came off after a 120 mph sprint, sounded like a monster, then sounded like it ate a valve spring.

Point is, sometimes you just get lucky and it's something stupid!

JSoko July 9th, 2015 08:30 AM

everything under the valve covers is still intact
narrowed it down to a blown head gasket

he ain't going to fix it

he called the place that buys junk cars and they offered him $200
he may part it out using a CL ad
