DoubleDee's Weapon Thread

I know I have a few things over on at OutdoorsmanTalk on weapon stuff, but I guess I don't have one here. I know all my pics are loaded here, so I thought I'd share some more. :grinz:

First off, my mini aresenal:

The magazines to support above weapons:

Today, I went shooting with my Rem :JSoko: .308 700 XCR and my Rem 798 in .243. Well I have good news and bad news. The good news?

That's right, 3 1/2" at 300 yds with factory ammo. Worse spread was the 2nd string, 6 1/4". I only shot 2 strings of 5 @ 300. It was getting late, barrel was warm to hot.
Rifle twist is 1/12" and the ammo is Hornady #8098 165gr IL BTSP. I'd say it shoots pretty good, at least to my standards. The scope is a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 10x40mm Mildot with 1 MOA elevation/.5 MOA windage.

And now for the bad news:

I now know that it looks as if my Rem 798 doesn't like Remingtons #R243W3 .243 100 gr Core-Lokt PSP. My 50 yd zero's were OK in years past, but it opens up at 100 yds, and then at 200, forget it. To much variance. I'll be using this specifically for hunting. If and when I go. Looks like I'm gonna need to find a different brand of ammo for this rifle. I know I shouldn't expect much from factory ammo, but shooting a 2 MOA, 3 MOA, 4 MOA (smallest groups at the bottom) and a 2 1/4 MOA and 4 MOA (middle 2 groups spread horizontally) is ridiculous. I know that trigger pull looks to be the culprit, but look at my Rem 700 target at 300 yds. Hmm... I'll try different ammo and see what the results are.

nice collection.

what optics you have the uppermost AR? i'm gonna go with that same grip too.

DoubleDee May 26th, 2011 08:57 PM

Aimpoint Comp M4 with the accompanying Aimpoint 3x magnifier. Troy Industries flip up HK style front sight and flip up rear sight.

CrazyD May 26th, 2011 09:03 PM

those flip ups are the same ones i'm looking at too.

DoubleDee May 26th, 2011 10:10 PM

I love em.

.308 win

first of all let me say .308 is my favorite round
and for those readers who dont know; every rifle/pistol likes a certian ammo, just like me and Heinekin

3 1/2" at 300 yds with factory ammo and rifle is better than I would expect;
Hornady #8098 is some good stuff

a .308 loves 165gr bullets

I hand load all my .308
IMR 4895
150gr Speer PSPBT
CCI Primers
= 3/4' @ 100 yds

this season I'm considering factory ammo due to my testing
as it takes me half a day to load up 100 rds
and my Lyman turret press is about worn slap out

my results from Rem. mod. Seven SS 20" barrel (my hunting rifle)

below the best I've/its done @ 100 yds 3 shot

Hornady Custom - 1 3/8" price - $27
Hornady 'Light Magnum' - 2 1/4" - $ 26
Remington 'Core-Lock' - 5/8" & [1 3/8" 5 shot] - $10

Hornady 'Custom' 165 gr SPBT = 2620 FPS
'Light Mag' 150gr SST = 2628 FPS
and the 'Core-Lock' 150gr SP MV = 2576 FPS
only a 2% differance in MV,
with a Kinetic Energy Differance of about 1% due to the 165gr.

Kinetic-energy differences between Light Magnum, High Energy, and Standard Loads are also not significant in terms of producing kills, I think. More important would be the choice of bullet and shot placement, where a premium bullet design will probably produce deep penetration at extended ranges over 300 yds depending on the game; I'am just not going to pay that higher price and most all my shots are from 15 - 150 yds ( I Hunt in the woods )

needless to say I bought 8 box of the 'Core-Lock' from the same lot
perfect for our thin skinned Whitetail; I'm sighted in and waiting for October

PS: our average weight of a Buck is 150 - 220 LBS
nothing like the Deer from the 'Corn Belt'

DoubleDee's First AR - after mods...

This is a teaser really for Crazy D, and more for 9fiveNarrowbed.

My very first AR. Bought her back in '06, the year I got home from Iraq. Heck, I was so used to carrying around an M4 that... I was having withdrawals. Besides, I was so accustomed to the weapon that as a first weapon, this would be perfect. This is way before I knew anything about AR's except for how to do a basic break down, clean, reassemble, and shoot. I did have some experience with DPMS back in college when a friend and I started a high power rifle team. So... I think because of that, I have stuck with DPMS. Here's some pics of what it looks like now:

Basic AR:

Aimpoint Comp M4 added:

Aimpoint 3x Maginifier added:

Troy Industries Folding BattleSights, small apeture:
Large apeture:

And looking through Comp M4 colocated with the iron sights:

When I first bought this rifle, it had the removable carry handle, standard handguards, front sight post/gas block (FSB for short), and a 16" 1x7" twist chromed barrel.

What I've upgraded (except for the sights):
$199.00 YHM (YHM-49-TF) 16" diamond fluted 1x9" twist chromed barrel
$129.00 YHM (YHM-9637-DX) Specter length Diamond Free Float tube
$ 52.99 YHM (YHM-9381A) low profile gas block
$ 17.50 YHM (YHM-BL-04A) carbine length black gas tube
$ 5.50 YHM (YHM-9469) swivel stud
$ 27.95 First Samco G27 Grip
$ 18.95 MagPul Aluminum Trigger Guard
$ 24.95 Panther Flash Hider (from DPMS website, but it's a YHM)
$ 14.95 Carbine Stock Sling Adapter
$ 8.97 DPMS Tactical Bolt Release
$499.76 Total on upgrades

$799.00 Price for the Rifle RFA2-AP4A

Optics:
$702.00 Aimpoint Comp M4
$439.99 Aimpoint 3x Magnifier
$153.00 Aimpoint Twistmount
$ 99.96 Troy Ind. Rear Battlesight
$ 83.16 Troy Ind. Front Battlesight
$1478.11 Total on optics

$2776.87 spent altogether for this rifle.... HOLY CRAP... That'll buy a really nice.... anything!!!

I need to find a better hobby.........

I should add that upon trying to remove the ORIGINAL buffer tube... I stripped the hell out of it. Therefore, I had to buy a new buffer tube... so that was an additional 19.95 expense. DPMS had locktite'd the buffer tube nut. No, I didn't think of heating it up before dissassembly, so it's my fault. That's what I get.

CrazyD May 27th, 2011 04:35 PM

Dang nice AR man. i see some things you did that i may copy into my build.

DoubleDee's Second AR - after mods...

Here's another teaser. AR #2 with parts/assemblies from DPMS and YHM. Anybody see a pattern? I just like what these guys have. This rifle was not an assembled off the shelf rifle. I pieced this one together. It all started last year (2010) with the purchase of a upper assembly that was on sale from DPMS. 16" 1x9" twist chromed barrel, flat top reciever, the standard upper reciever sorta thing:

It had the basic part I was looking for, and I was thinking about "building" an AR anyways. I put "building" in quotes because this wasn't a ground up assembly.
So, while I was in Iraq, I started looking around for the parts I wanted to add, more on that list below. And when I got back... well, I needed a lower. When you buy an AR lower, you have to get it from someone that holds an FFL. Then you have to fill out the paperwork. Which is nothing. And if you don't have the "you don't have to make that phone call" card, then they have to call and check on you. If you've bought a firearm before, you know what I'm talking about. Anyways... at a local gun show, I was able to buy me a DPMS lower. I found one that had the Pardus stock ready to sell, so I bought it. So here's the pics:

Basic AR:

With optics attached:

Looking through the scope:
Yes, it does have an illuminated reticle.

And the red dot:
Trust me, that thing is tiny. (she laughed, 8!TC#)

So here's the rundown:
Upragded parts:
$129.00 YHM (YHM-9636) Rifle length lightweight Float tube
$ 52.99 YHM (YHM-9381A) low profile gas block
$ 17.50 YHM (YHM-BL-04A) carbine length black gas tube
$ 5.50 YHM (YHM-9469) swivel stud
$ 13.99 YHM (YHM-9484A) Forearm End Cap 16/16"
$ 24.99 YHM (YHM-638) Bipod Adapter
$ 13.46 Hogue Grip
$ 19.95 MagPul Aluminum Trigger Guard
$ 30.00 Miculek Compensator
$ 16.29 Carbine Stock Sling Adapter
$323.67 Total on upgrades

$459.00 (BA-50-AP416) Cost for Upper
$270.00 (LR-05PS) Cost for Lower
$729.00 Total for a working rifle

Optics: (aww geez)
$ 891.48 Leupold (47638) Mark 4 MR/T 2.5-8x36mm Illum. MilDot M1 turrets
$ 135.00 YHM (YHM-305-K) 30mm Dual Offset Scope Ring Set
$ 316.24 Leupold (67435) Deltapoint 3.5moa red dot cross slot mount
$ 16.99 YHM Dovetail Angle Mount 1 slot
$ 89.00 Troy Ind. Rear Battlesight
$ 84.95 Troy Ind. Front Battlesight
$1533.66 Total on optics

$2586.33 total spent on build.

So, on 2 ARs.... (i REALLY need to find a better hobby) I've spent 5363.20. Maybe I should just give up on the AR platform.... to much CRAP to spend money on.

And no, I didn't break anything on this rifle during the build. The next upgrade for this rifle will be a chromed bolt. That'll run... bastards don't have their chromed bolt carrier assemblies anymore.... guess it'll have to be the diamond coated one for 184.95.... That sucks.

CrazyD May 27th, 2011 05:25 PM

nice man, i really like that barrel on the first one. Keeping eyeing and thinking of going that way with my build.

optics always run ya at least if not more then the rifle itself.
