E4OD Trans Slipping
Hey guys,
95 F150 302 5.0 with an E4OD trans that is slipping! If it's not one thing, it's the other. Anyway, on a cold start drive doesnt work at all, the engine revs but doesn't move. If I drop it in second it works just fine.
Once the truck is warmed up, drive works perfectly fine again. Anyone ever rebuild their own transmission? I looked at nice heavy duty 4WD rebuild kit with shift kit for around 500 dollars...
Complete description of parts in the rebuild kit:- 3 Borg Warner Overdrive clutches .078"
- 2 Overdrive steels .080"
- 3 Borg Warner Intermediate clutches (Hi-Energy) .078"
- 3 Intermediate steels 2-.080", 1-.125"
- 5 Borg Warner Direct clutches (Smooth) .077"
- 5 Direct steels .078"
- 1 Direct pressure plate .125"
- 5 Borg Warner Forward clutches .075" (Hardened splines)
- 4 Forward steels .078"
- 6 Borg Warner Reverse clutches .078"
- 6 Reverse steels .068"
- 2 Borg Warner Coast clutches .078"
- 2 Coast steels .080"
- Molded rubber intermediate servo piston
- 1 Intermediate band
- Overdrive sprag (34 Elements w/metal cage)
- Overdrive clutch return spring snap ring (Heavy Duty)
- Intermediate sprag HD (45 Elements)
- Borg Warner low/reverse (16 roller clutch)
- Bearing kit
- Thrust washer kit
- Complete bushing kit with Extra wide Bronze front pump bushing
- Complete sealing ring kit with updates
- Transmission filter (OEM) Sealed Power 4WD
- Complete paper & rubber (gasket set) with Duraprene pan gasket
- Trans-Go Heavy Duty Shift kit helps prevent torque converter burnup, corrects reverse delay or no reverse hot, 2nd and 3rd clutch burnup, soft shifts, pump buzz, etc. Comes with EPC boost valve.

Doesn't seem to be rocket science as long as you put things exactly where and how they go. I am wondering if this is a job for the professionals or can this be a good weekend do-it-yourselfer?

I belive there are too many unknowns to a trans rebuild for an amature
look back at some of those Ken Collins videos on the say 'C-4 rebuild'
he takes an air hose and applys air to a opening to make something else pop up on the other side to verfiy that it is opening, then manipulates a special tool between two shims being careful not to touch that other thing amajig to insert something he pulled off the shelf
then you have to tighten the spring thrust washer so it is contacting the servo, then let off to the thickness of 2 matches ( this is the part that gets me as some folks use paper matches and I use Wood)

well I can see (in the words of Gunnery SGT. R. Lee Ermy) "a cluster fuck" about to happen
I hope this helps as I see no one else had the gumpshion to tell you 'get er done' by someone else
maybe you can find some guys like G&S that will let you get involved in the build
