Unhappy Teens' road trip ends in deadly crash

A state trooper investigates the scene of the deadly crash.

Scroll down for more photos of the crash scene.

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. - A road trip by four Canadian teenagers turned tragic when the car they were riding in smashed into a tree at high speed, killing two and leaving the other two in critical condition.

The Washington State Patrol says the four teens were heading back home to Calgary, Alberta, along Highway 8 in Thurston County on Sunday when the deadly crash happened.

The Calgary teens, all 18 years old, had recently graduated from high school and had just visited Phoenix, Ariz., and San Diego, Calif., said Trooper Brandy Kessler.

The teens were heading from the coastline to Seattle via Highway 8 at about 6:20 p.m. when the 1998 Honda CRV, driven by Benjamin W. Harms, flew straight off the roadway in a curve and slammed into a group of trees.

The force of the crash pushed the car about 20 feet up the tree before it dropped, coming to rest at the base of the tree. The front driver and passenger side areas burst into flames, Kessler said.

State troopers and medics responded to the crash scene, where two of the female passengers, Mikelle R. Hendrickson and Kylie E. Doxtater, were pronounced dead.

The third female passenger in the vehicle, Lena L. Elliott, was rushed to St. Peter Hospital in Lacey with life-threatening injuries.

Harms was also taken to St. Peter with life-threatening injuries and was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Both Harms and Elliott remain in critical condition.

A trooper at the scene, who is also a qualified drug recognition expert, examined Harms and arrested him at the scene on suspicion of vehicular assault for driving under the influence of drugs. A blood sample was taken as well.

Marijuana was found in the vehicle during the crash investigation. It is also believed that Harms may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The investigation is not yet complete and currently no charges have been filed. Harms may face charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault once the investigation has been concluded.

Washington State Patrol Capt. Mike DePalma said, "Our hearts go out to the families and friends of these teens. As troopers we become part of these devastating experiences, and this is one of those we will never forget. It will be on our hearts forever."

The fact that 2 people survived amazes the hell out of me.

I was thinking the same thing. Just another case of teenagers being irresponsible. Sad.

not all teenagers are irresponsible, just the ones who decide to smoke dope and try to drive while high, its unfair that if anyone survived it had to be the one who was irresponsible

I'm not trying to make light of this tragedy, but the passengers kind of had to see this coming, with the drivers name being what it is.
