Default smog air pump ?

my name is sam and i own a 1977 f-150 jade green met. i just got my emissions done on my truck and didn't pass although it passed last year when i bought the truck. my question is did all of the 1977 f-150 have air pumps or did just the unleaded only 351m for emissions? The reason why i'm asking is my truck never had any of the smog protuction stuff and passed fine now they are saying it needs a smog air pump in order to pass.

A 77 should not need any of the emissions stuff like that. Did you go back to the same shop as the year before? I would look for a shop that knows what the hell they are talking about.

Default smog pump

check to see if the local smog laws have changed for older trucks #1

look at the smog stickers under the hood should have one on the drivers side valve cover if not have your local ford dealer look up the specs #2

if it calls for nothing more than a pcv valve take the info back to the test site showem the proper papers #3

On 80-96 trucks(not sure on 77s), the smog pump failing won't actually cause those symptoms unless there is a bad check valve on the crossover pipe. The TAB valve either directs the smog pump's air onward to the TAD valve or out into the atmosphere(not used). If the smog pump's air is forwarded to TAD valve, the air would either be diverted to the head or to the catalytic converter. When the air is forwarded to the head (via the crossover pipe equiped with a check valve to prevent back flow), it is to help the engine\catalytic converter warm up. The air is injected into the head AFTER combustion takes place, but the oxygen sensor reads it and make the ECC believe the engine is running lean so it will cause a rich condition.

On these trucks, a CEL wouldn't be triggered.

Since it is running ok (my impression from his post) then I would say, if there is a difference in emissions, it may be the fuel. The use of blended fuels is becoming more and more common as EPA restrictions become tighter and tighter. If it is the same time of year as last years test, you might try adding some octane booster to your fuel tank before going in to test. Oh, and Whitesleeper's suggestions are well worth trying first.

Default Smog failure!

I have been following your vacuum diagrams and cannot locate where my TAB is to connect last vacuum line. I look by the smog pump and there is a big bubble type vacuum holder in the line between smog pump and the TAD. The other hose leaving the smog pump goes to canister which I'm guessing is for dumping air. Am I missing a valve. I am the third owner of the truck. It runs fine except gets bad gas mileage and revs up high but doesnt go very fast. Engine light comes on after it gets warm or I go on highway. Any help would be appreciated.
