Default starting issues

ok guys, i have a 79 f-250 crew cab 4x4, with a 400 engine, and a c-6 transmission. when i turn the key to the on or run position, the starter spins, and the engine fires. the problem is that the starter stays engaged, and won't disengage unless i turn the key off. this is a new wiring harness with everything connected correctly according to the directions. it has a new starter(from napa), and another new solenoid (this one from autozone..the most expensive one they had). anyone have any ideas? i can't wait to get this thing back on the road!!!!!!!! thank you for any help.
