Default Ford, Explorer, Brakes

I need some info on bleeding the brakes on a 2006 ford explorer.i have been told that the engine should not be running when bleeding is this correct?
I am doing this because the brake pedal if not pushed for appx.3-4 minutes the pedal will go almost to the floor but still has stopping power and when i let off and hit the pedal again i have a full brake pedal so any suggestions on what else could be going on with the brakes.this vehicle has 92k plus miles bought new by myself and no issues at all until this has always been serviced regularly on time.
All help appreciated. Thanks arnett
