Are you driving in city traffic? Do you accelerate rapidly away from intersections? Are you hauling or towing anything?

My 2000 supercab averages about 14 mpg, but dropped to around 8 mpg when towing my travel trailer.

yeah you should be getting better mpg's, our expedition 5.4 gets roughly 12 to 13 in the city. id say change spark plugs, filters/fluids, o2 sensors, and try to pull some codes. see if any sensors are messed up or outa wack

I would look into doing a full tune-up. Change your plugs (I use E3), oil, air filter, trans fluid, flush the radiator and so on. Also do you have the check engine light on by any chance?

how are you getting the numbers? i mean is it from on-board computer/odometer mileage or at pump gallons or an average of miles divided by gallons over three or four fill-ups?

was it one time or repeated driving showed you the same numbers? Would seem if it was after/during a tow i guess it could be expected but after that you would have to have noticed major changes in engine sounds and truck performance to get only half your normal mileage going south?
