Oil Pressure Drop 78 351w
I have a 1974 F100 with a 78 351 Windsor in it. My oil pressure has been on the low side of the gauge since I got the truck. I changed the oil and it stayed there so I just planned on putting something a little thicker than 10w-30 in next oil change. That was about 300-500 miles ago.
Just today, my oil pressure dropped to there very bottom of the "safe" area on the gauge. It would go up just slightly when the engine revved up but not that much. I've read that putting a new oil pump in or replacing the main bearings may fix the drop in oil pressure.
Any advice on what it could be? How to narrow down the causes? I considered just putting some Lucus additive in it to thicken up the oil. Thoughts on that? It's my daily so I need it in good shape.

Are you sure that it doesn't just need a new sending unit?

Well, had to go somewhere and driving back it went back to normal. It hovers right on top of the O of "oil" for the most part. So I guess thats good news. Still, is there a way I would know of the sender unit is going bad?

A new sending unit is less then $20. It's only 1 wire attached on the top. I know nobody wants to just throw new parts at something hoping for a fix, but that's cheap enough to be worth the effort. It's located on the driver side in front of the oil filter.

The only way you will know for SURE what your oil pressure is, is by removing the sender and connecting a mechanical gauge. You can have both if you install a T fitting.
