351w engine swap thread
to put more info on this site for other members/new members/visitors/everyone im copying my thread from f150online... here we go!
i skipped the first 2 posts as they really have no info, just saying i bought a parts truck... yawn... lol
anyways...
this is what i started with
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eP0mnPUr76Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0 x999999"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eP0mnPUr76Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0 x999999" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
11/07/09--well i finally have a weekend off! been trying to work on pulling the motor out of my donor truck but its hard to do with a lack of help. got all the accessory brackets off and radiator removed. im having a hard time removing the exhaust. the bolts on the manifolds (y-pipe to manifold) wont budge even with a impact wrench or breaker bar. broke out the saw-zaw for the old exhaust... i should have the motor pulled by tomorrow afternoon and on the stand.
the '94-'96 302 has the same firing order as 351:
1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
'93 and earlier 302 is:
1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
my donor truck is same year, made at the same plant and only 2K off on the production #, just a fyi lol
11/08/09--got the motor pulled out of the truck this morning... i sanded the oil pan down as the paint was flaky on the bottom and re painted. changed the water pump. it didn't need it but extra insurance. i should have the motor in on friday if im off and the weather stays clear (tropical storm!)
i also soaked everything under the hood of my truck with degreaser for 3 hours and pressure-washed the frame rails. after it dried i tried that Dupli-Color rubberized undercoating on the cross-member and frame rails. looks really good. now i need to paint the firewall as some of the paint was blasted off lol
i also scrubbed the block down and repainted it but it got dark before i could snap some pics
351 out and on the stand:

after i pressure-washed the frame:

11/12/09--i ordered new exhaust earlier this week. should be here on Friday. going back to the OE style setup for now to get me back on the road. i liked the sound of the donor truck with just cats and no muffler.
i was curious about the differences in wiring harness between the 5.0/5.8, i checked my Chilton's engine harness diagram for the 5.0 and 5.8 and spent the last hour comparing the 2 and everything is the same between harnesses. everything is in the same # pin location between the 2 harnesses. i'll give it a shot with the 5.8 harness first as is is in way better condition than my harness (i ended up using my 302 harness as i was lacking top end power.)
11/13/09--well im off today! waiting on the fedex truck to get here with the shorty headers and exhaust system... heres some pics of the motor after touching up with paint and adding a little bit of color, and the frame rails/cross-member after coating it

11/14/09--i got the motor in the truck today!!! it is almost done, just gotta bolt and weld up the exhaust. it starts and runs AWESOME! idles perfect, revs great, no hesitation. at first it did but i found a vacuum line came disconnected. i used the 5.8L harness as my harness was in real bad shape... (again, i ended up using my 302 harness.)

and yes i have long hair haha

11/16/09--the truck sounds good with the highflow cat and supper 44 muffler. not too loud nice deep rumble...
got a minor exhaust leak at the header collector...
compared to the 302, holy crap! this thing gets up and goes!!! only half throttle at a dead stop squawked the 35's on a stock 3.55 gear ratio amazing what an extra 60 lb.ft. will do lol
im thinkin 393 stroker when this one blows:devil:
11/21/09--called the local 4Wheel Parts and a gear swap to 4.56 or 4.88 ratio will be $652 out the door.
VIDEOS!!!
302 LT headers, true duals, super 44's dumped at the mufflers

literally, we dropped the engine in, plugged the harness in and fired right up by barely bumping the key! since the swap i already put a lil over 2k miles on her and should hit or be past the 150k mark by the end of the month. i still get the same mpg as i did with the 302. and its nice having a new transmission also, it no longer down shifts just to climb an overpass!
