if an auto you have a choice between C6 or AOD.. C6 is more common..

I'm gonna say C6 more than likely. Easiest way to ID is looking at the Transmission Pan:

Nevermind. Blue's post does a much better job than I could at the moment. Odds are it is a C6 if it's an auto. If it's a standard than its most likely a T18 unless its the rare 3spd column shift.

1983 was the Last Year for the Column Shift 3spd, used only in the F100's. They also used more New Process 435's behind the 300 in the 1980+ trucks then they did the T18. Not saying they didn't come with it, they were optioned, just more NP435's than the T18.

You can also look at the Shift indicator, as long as it's Auto, and the transmission hasn't been replaced with a different one.
C6: P R N D 2 1
AOD: P R N (D) D 1
C6 was used majorly behind the 300 cause of the 300's torque, before the 351w H.O. came out, the 300 had the 2bbl 351w beat in torque and almost the same horsepower, then after the H.O. the 351w had a little more of an edge in torque and horsepower.

Also, AOD as long as it's stock transmission pan, will have "Ford Metric" stamped in it.

I know the trans in not original. Looking at Bigblue79's post its a c4. Thank for all the every one. Now all I to do is trry to find a cheap used 4 or 5 spead auto, so I drive at higher speeds.

That one was replaced then.. They didn't offer the C4 with the 300 in the 1980's.
AFAIK, they're isn't a 5spd Auto made to bolt up to the Windsor pattern that is Vacuum/Hydraulic operated. You'll have to find either a C6, or an AOD from a Carbureted truck, the EFI's used a TV cable to shift them. Or if your mechanically inclined, consider a M5OD or ZF-S542 swap, both are 5spds, the ZF is beefier and has a Granny Gear for 1st with OD for 5th.
