They're the samething, the newer F150's(about 83-96) had a optional gear ratio of 3.55, it if was 4x4 it had a 3.54 gear in the front. If you can(D60 front axle) no it shouldn't mess anything up, the only reason it has 4.09's is there wasn't a 4.10 front D60 gear made in 1974.

When I was looking around on the internet to find out if I had dana 60's or dana 44's everything I saw was telling me I had a D44 in the front and a D60 in the rear. The diff covers are different so my guess is that somebody swapped the axles and that I have a D44 in the front a D60 in the rear.So if I were to put a dana 44 with 4.10 gears in it would I mess anything up?what do I need to do to Identify everything to be 100% sure what i got?

Thanks,
Will

Ford did have a Dana 44HD axle that was 8 lug in they're 3/4 ton's so it's possible it came with a D44HD from the factory.

No, IMO it wouldn't mess anything up, having the same gear ratio's in the front and front is perfect. If I had the extra money and was in you're shoes, I'd also install either a locker or a LSD unit in the front axle when I swapped gears.

Were you ever able to get the stubborn piece off of your axle?

In simple terms no. You are fine.
Ford used gear ratios one off from another, for whatever stupid reason. Gears need to be matched in a 4x4 between the two axles, but there is a slight bit of room for err there. Don't try to use 3.08's and 4.56's though..
