Default Hurricane Sandy sinks HMS 'Bounty' off North Carolina coast

http://www.tampabay.com/news/weather...-coast/1258884

ST. PETERSBURG — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for two members of the HMS Bounty crew in the torrential waters of Hurricane Sandy after pulling 14 from life boats as the famous ship sank into the waves.

Coast Guard spokesman Nyx Cangemi described the rescue effort as "challenging," noting visibility was limited to one mile and airplane and helicopter crews were battling the storm's unrelenting 18-foot waves and 40 mph winds Monday morning.

The Bounty, which once called the Pier home, was scheduled to return to St. Petersburg on Nov. 10 for one day.

It had been sailing off the coast of North Carolina when the crew lost contact with the vessel's owner, who called the Coast Guard.

Something was wrong. The ship was sinking.

Crew members put on survival suits and boarded lifeboats to await rescue about 6:30 a.m., officials said.

Portsmouth officials dispatched an air crew to locate the ship, a replica built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando.

Days before it sank, the vessel had rerouted to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy. A statement on its website acknowledged "this will be a tough voyage for Bounty."

The Bounty was featured in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, became the setting for Pirates — a hard-core sex film — and sailed around the country as a tourist attraction.
