Default Well This Sucks (Paint/Bodywork Advice Needed)

alright, so as some of you may know, i dicked up my passenger door last week.

story goes like this> me and the step bro go make a cigarette run> come back> i pull up to the curb and then start backing up so theres not as much space between me and the car behind me> noob step bro isnt paying attention and opens the door while im still backing up> door catches on the grass and opens about 160 degrees

aftermath

chunk of grass missing

^door opened as far as it will go, overlaps the fender almost a half inch

^door only opens about a foot = no good for picking up chicks

Soooo the fender and door are gonna need a repaint and some body work. Gonna go by the body shop tomorrow and see what they say.

now what i need to figure out is, im pretty sure i wanna report this to my insurance since i still have full coverage (was literally gonna switch to liability the next day until this happened). But I have no idea what I should tell them cus I really dont wanna get screwed over on this. And IDEALLY im going to try to get a full repaint out of this cus my paint is terrible. Idk if I can file multiple claims or what, Ive never had to claim anything through insurance. My drivers fender and door have chips all over from getting sprayed by rocks one day while at school, theres a deeeeep scratch on the bedside from the P.O., the paint is cracking under the clear on the hood etc etc.

so do any of yall have any advice on how i should play this out?

Damn that sucks! Will go on your record if you make a claim. May even raise your rates. What is your deductible for that type of damage?

Keep in mind that I'm in Canada so things my be different where you are but check this out. My car was vandalized in my parking lot. It was about 6 years old and had rust along the bottom edges and paint was showing its age. So the insurance sent me to one of thier shops for a estimate, they claimed $2800 for just the vandalized area! Holy shit car not worth that in my eyes. I go to another auto body shop they say they will fix up all the rust and repaint whole car for $1300. Humm. I go back to insurance and ask if they will give me the 2800. Their answer was no, they'll give me half the estimate value 1400 no shit. 100 bucks in my pocket and my bodyshop did a great job on the car it lasted another 7 years.

I don't know much about this but if I were you I'd take it to a body shop get an estimate and tell the to tack on the hood and ect. and report a claim. Or take a golf cart go all the way down the side, scratch the hood really bad then report it has a hit and run

ok now im not trying to judge anyone and dont wanna start a huge issue. but alot of these suggestions are trying to encourage insurance fraud. and i know it goes on everyday, but that dont make it right. ive be on the other end of insurance fraud. i was 16 (now18)just got my license got my first car a POS 91 Camry. and was in a car accident. completely my fault turned when a big box truck was blocking my view. hit the front drivers side fender on a white mazda. well... anyway 3 days before the year of statute of limitations was up (my birthday) i got a lawsuit notice as well as my dad cause he was the registered owner of the car. well the guy i hit was trying to claim that i permanantly dissabled him. come to find out he had back surgery 2 weeks before. and was trying to claim i caused it. well the lawsuit was in the court system for almost a year. and he had 2 different lawyers drop him cause they realized he was committing fraud. and it ended up getting dropped. now i realize that my ordeal was much more serious but still any fraud is seriously bogus. that just drives everybodies already high rates even higher!!
heres a pic of my old car after the wreck.

Some of the suggestions are indicative of fraud. however, if you are ONLY claiming the door damage, this is not fraud, and a legit insurance claim. if you are tryint to get a full repaint, then we are back into fraud again.

Average deductibles are $500 & $1000, some lower. I would try to get a few estimates from different body shops first. it may not be worth telling your insurance company about this.

And yes, Webby is correct. Once a claim is PAID by the company, it goes on your driving/claim history. When your policy is up for renew, they take that claim into account and it factors into your new policy. Just because you pay into insurance, doesn't mean the company is satisfied. They want the money back that they pay out. And they get it by raising your rates.

I had a hit and run outside my work 7 years ago, $3500 in damage, 6 months later, my insurance went up $25 a month. The claims stay with you for 5 years also.

If you're experienced enough, ever think about doing the work yourself? Most of the time it's hellava lot cheaper to bring the finished parts to your body shop, have them spray em and clear em and do the install yourself.

I'm not condoning fraud here. After all who is comitting the fraud? The insurance company sent me to their adjuster which was the local Ford Dealership and gave me the estimate which would only paint the top of the car , this was through insurance. I then went to another bodyshop and got a estimate not through insurance but from my pocket and the whole car including rust fixed for less than half. I saved my insurance company 1400 dollars, my driving record is good and this did not effect my rates.

Your case is not fraud by any means, if anything the shop they sent you to was trying to bilk way more money out of the ins. company than what was really required. You lucked out by having them actually give you a check. The few claims I have ever made, the checks were made directly to the body shop.
