Default Steering Wheel Lock Broken

Well, the Las Vegas Police Department released a news bulletin four weeks ago warning Ford F-250 and F-350 owners that these models are being stolen all across town. I did not hear about the warning until last week after I parked my F-250 at our "Gated" community. A lot of good a gated community did.
I parked it at 5:25 PM, went up to my condo and had dinner, then went to see a friend at 7:45. My truck was gone! Metro found it the next day and then told me about the bulletin.
Damage was minimal, but even though I replaced the key cylinder, I can't seem to find out how they broke my steering wheel lock. I was told that all they have to do is give it a hard downward jerk and it breaks free. Here are the symptoms. At the 12 O'clock position it does not lock when it is shut off. If I turn the engine off with it in the 3 or 9 O'clock position, it locks in that position. I cannot find anything online about what part is broken or how to fix it. PLUS, for anyone who knows about how this works, if I can fix it myself without going to Ford, then is there an aftermarket stronger lock that replaces the original? Thanks
.
