Default home made roof rack

got a bunch of 3/16 2x2 angle iron from my work, decided to make a roof rack. havent gotten much done on it, just one of the sections cut and welded...

i cut 2 sections at 6 ft and was left with 4 ft left over. cargo space will be 6ft x 4ft. the second sction of the frame i cut at 7'6" which will extend over the cab for offroad lights across the front and flood lights on the sides

heres the idea

cut at 6 ft

tack welded and squared up

section one done

more info and pics to come

Exclamation Holy Weight Limit

keep in mind the weight limit of your fiberglass cap you don't want your flag to fall, everything is held to your Truck by 4 C-clamps and a top heavy load may cause problems on corners or when bouncing around on that dirt road. Look to the inside top, see the square outline of something thick, thats a piece of ply-wood sandwitched in the fiberglass, now look to the edges where the top curves down, even though the curve does give structural support this is thin all the way down to the rails and not made to support a heavy load.

Sorry for all the negative vibes, but I dont want anything happening that would cause you to loose your load and put that old lady down the street at risk, as she or her children will be looking for ; ask 2 of your Honeys to get up there and watch the inside flex.

Then if you decide to go forward; take it apart and cut the ends on a 45degree angle and re-weld for a flush fit, or notch out the bottom of 2 of the angle irons so they all lay flat on the concrete.
I know the frame will not be lite and according to your sketch it will weigh aprox. 155 lbs.for both top and bottom rails, 2x2x3/16; then add the weight of the other stuff you put up there and it could spell disaster

if need be, i know a very good fiberglass guy that can add more structural reinforcements for dirt cheap, any glass work i need done for that matter...

couple years back my friends and i would hang out at the local walmart parking lot(at 2am), 2 sometimes 3 friends would sit on the topper and the only place it flexed was directly in the middle but was rigid around the outside corners... that was on a daily basis...

A lot of fibreglass caps (canopies) have a 150lb weight limit on their roof racks.

I like the look of the concept you're doing ASWAFF.

Sad to say but I don't think ASwaff knows who NKOTB are. Pretty lame but we are getting old! Now lets stay on topic!
