Default 1980 F100 Shifting Problem

I just purchased a 1980 F100 302 v8 3-speed automatic as a project truck. I've got the engine running well, but having problems shifting. The shift lever just moves freely without engaging gears. If it randomly finds a gear, it will drive and shift ok. Obviously, the indicator doesn't work, but wasn't sure if it was a linkage problem, or what...

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

Have someone move the lever for you while you look down at the transmission and along the linkage path. This will help you tell if the problem is in the linkage or the transmission.

Thanks, that was my plan for this weekend. I'm assuming it is moving the linkage, in that it will find a gear randomly. If the lever is moving the linkage, any thoughts?

I think that if the pointer doesn't move, the linkage may be slipping somewhere.
