Question mystery rear end

new here, I have a 1-84 ford f-150 4x4 a/t c-6 with an 8.8 housing with a 9" carrier. door plate says axle code 16,axle tag say 9" but it takes a pinion seal for an 8.8". anybody run across something like this before, I have been a mech for 45 years (mainly heavy equip.)axle tag says MDM BK2 3M20 (bottom)3:50 9 S318D
