Transmission Compatibility Question
Hopefully one of you guys will be able to answer this. My M5R2 trans that is mounted to my 351W needs to come back out of the truck because it's locked up. I have a T170FT 4 speed I was hoping to put in it's place. Am I S.O.L.?,....or is there a bell housing out there that will work?

The 351W uses the Windsor pattern, the 460 uses the 335/385 pattern. I don't believe any adapters exist, but maybe a 351M or 400 bellhousing might bolt to your engine, that's 335/385 pattern.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do some more research now that I know what the patterns are. Looks like I need to do some more side work and just bite the bullet on taking the 5 speed to a shop.

In the next county over is JW Performance transmissions. They were able to point me in the right direction. So ended up calling American Powertrain. Guy on the phone told me they have exactly what I needed to make that 4 speed bolt to a Windsor and they would be more then happy to send it to me for about $650. We'll see.

You could probably get your M5 rebuilt for that kind of money.

I think you're right. I found a rebuild kit for around $140 or so last week. The only shop around me that does older manuals wants $250 to tear it down, plus whatever to rebuild. I think it's probably neck and neck.
