Default Oil Pan Replacement, And Then...?

Hello people, long time listener - first time caller...

So in a nutshell, I spotted an oil leak after putting a quart in. The leak ended up being caused by a fissure (via oxidation) on the side of the oil pan - just above and rearward of the plug-bolt.

There is approximately a 4x4 inch heavily rusted area surrounding the crack, which feels very brittle. My assessment is that the pan is garbage.

I've read enough accounts to determine the "easiest" way to replace the pan is to lift the engine with a picker, which will keep the underside free of clutter.

The C.P. method is fine and works for me. What I really want to know, is what else should be inspected while I've got the patient on the table? The pump, pickup and pan are getting replaced out of hand, but this truck has 175k on it so who knows what else has gone to hell in there.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Sorry for the pause, just started my R&R, and got the gaskets portion of my rockauto order today...

The engine is a 5.0/302 EFI V8.

I'd just like to announce, that the process of replacing the oil pan - on the 5.0/302 EFI - is a pain in the ass.

However...

This was the first auto-project I'd done, SO hardcore, that I actually needed help with it.

So my dad helped me out, we made that engine our bitch, and we could ALMOST stand to be within 10 feet of one another - when we were done.

Ford just rules, but I rule my ford.
