Default Fuel Delivery Problem

I have a 1992 FORD F-150 with 4.9L L6, auto trans, (motor and trans replace 30,000 miles ago) two fuel tanks (front and rear), I live in AZ so the weather gets quite hot (I add that only to explain that this problem "seems" to happen when it is quite hot). I will be driving on the back tank, when all of a sudden I will get loss of power and a feeling like truck is fuel starved...I will then switch to front tank and no problem...I will drive a few days like that then all at once the truck will sputter and act like fuels starved again flip to rear and no problem...I have replaced the Fuel Injection Pressure Regulator, and filters...I am an older guy and so I remember the old cars getting vapor lock...that is what this feels like...both tanks are at 1/2 to 3/4 full...any one have any ideas...there was a recall of this year on an issue that sounded like this I talked to Ford Recall and they assured me this vehicle (after giving them vin number) was not involved...I could use some help on this one.

vapor lock was the first thing that came to my mind

we have some desert members that may be able to help you out

think about insulating the fuel line with that black pipe insulation or isolating any heat source from the line ( muffler, cat, exhaust pipe ) sometimes adding/making a heatshield from sheet metal will do the trick

Most of these trucks have that insulation stock. It sounds like it might be a dirty switch or something along those lines. WHen it almost dies and you switch to the opposite tank, what happens if you switch it right back to the original tank?

it still stalls out however if you wait a day or two it is fine...and the weird part is you drive along for two three days on the tank you switched it too when started to act up, then it does the same thing and you switch back to the tank you had problems with a few days before and it works fine!...drives me crazy

I would think it's a wiring issue, but it could also be dirty gas on the inscreen filter. It takes a few days for the screen to suck up enough debris to clog it, then a few days to let it all settle out of it when you are not using it. If you are ever in a situation to check it when the truck dies, try to see if the fuel pump is still getting the +12v it should be. If not, then just work your way back to thepower source. Check for power at the selector switch, then the inertia switch, then the fuel pump relay, then the connection from the relay to the battery.

Thanks I think what I am going to do is pull the bed soon and just go thru the complete fuel system

That would probably be best, I'd change out the screens anyways, since you'll be there.

removing the beds on these truck is easy, I've done it twice. You'll see what I mean.
