Default 1978 F-100

My son recently bought a 1978 Ford F100 and after a few days of driving he couldn't shift into a few gears or out. His shifter looks like it needed to be replaced because of the boot inside was shredded. So far we cant find anything to replace it with or maybe look for a transmission with the shifter already there. Anyone know what would sync up for this truck. It is a manual four speed with a Saginaw transmission. Any help would be great. Someone told him maybe a Galaxy 500 trans might work.

What is a Saginaw transmission doing in a Ford? I thought Saginaw was a division of GM.

This should help you ID it:

I think you have either a BW or NP 4-speed

look real good for the trans tag, that will tell you what you have
or post a photo of the side with the shift linkage
