When you turn the key without starting, do you hear the fuel pump click on and prime? If you feather the throttle will it stay running? Does it do it on both tanks? Pending answers to these questions, it will be difficult narrowing down your troubles as there are a number of components that can be involved.

thanks bikertrash 3531, well i got it to run for about 2 or 3 min. today then it sputtered and died . i tested my way back to the wires at my single tank, there are 4 wires ,1 purple , 1 gray, 1 black and 1 black with a white stripe. i tested them and there is power in the gray and in the purple. but still no fuel at the fuel rail. i think maybe the fuel regulater or fuel pump also i replaced the relay and the inertia switch was fine. i wish i knew wich color wire was the one to the pump?

I don't have a wire diagram. Maybe someone that has one can chime in here. But the fact that it ran for "2 or 3 minutes" suggests that pressure is bleeding off. The only two places I would think, is like you said, the pump or the fuel pressure regulator. I would replace the FPR first as its inexpensive and easy to deal with in comparison to the fuel pump. Also if it is the pump, you'd have a nice, new, and strong FPR to handle the new pump. A good indication of a bad FPR is the smell of fuel in the vacuum lines.

Another thing that just popped in my head is the PIP. Its in the distributor and as it spins it triggers the PIP and tells the fuel pump to keep pumping. If it fails, it would stop the pump while the injectors fire off the remaining fuel in the rail resulting in no pressure at the rail.

I put a regulator on it today and still no start, I was going to buy a pump at o'reilly's but before I went I checked rock auto, they had the same pump for 100.00 or so less , what a markup on those things .so I ordered it from them,I can wait 2 days to save a hundred bucks. in the morning I am going to install a rebuilt kit for my 5 speed shifter , I made a shifter extension today. I got rid of that tube it just spun around which is no good for a t-shifter handle , I removed the tube and welded onto the stub ,looks cool!! I red primed it.

I remember my old 88 4x4 with M5, PO took a Hurst t-handle made for a screw on shift rod and with a step up drill bit, drilled it out til it fit snugly on the shift rod and hammered it in place. I loved that thing, I want one in my current truck and might order the Core Shifter's Short Throw kit for it.
