Question Transfer case question

I have been doing a little research on my new toy and read that the ESOF transfer case has an auto lock feature in 4Hi & 4Lo (it also has an AWD option), and cannot find a description of exactly what is locking in those modes. Is it the hubs? or the differential? is it only the rear diff? or both?

For those who don't know, the vehicle in question is a 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer trim level, with a 5.4 V8

Any info on this will help me sleep better at night knowing that I now know what that means, know what I mean?

Interesting articles, but I don' think that is the info i was looking for. I think the auto lock feature has to do with the rear differential, but I am not sure (hence, the question!)about that.
