Default Issues with Fuel Guage/Question regarding oil

Hey all! Picked up my first ford, a 1993 F250 7.5L Auto. In great condition, very clean with only minor issues, one of them being the fuel gauge. When I'm on the primary tank the fuel gauge reads empty, but when I switch over to the secondary tank the gauge reads past full. Ive checked the fuses and all that needed to be replaced were replaced, but that didn't change anything. Next is to get behind the instrument cluster. Has anyone had this problem before?

Also, the owners manual says to use 5W-30 oil, the previous owner used 5W-40. I planned on always putting in synthetic, just wondering which oil is preferred for the motor. Currently has 157,000 miles on her. Thanks for the help!

5W40 synthetic won't hurt it.
