Police arrest woman in New Hampshire

Photograph by: Google Maps, Google MapsThe baby cut from the womb of a woman found dead Monday in her Worcester, Massachusetts apartment has been found alive in New Hampshire and another Worcester woman was in police custody, police said Wednesday night.

Julie A. Corey, 35, was arrested by New Hampshire State Police yesterday and charged with being a fugitive from justice.

Detective Capt. Edward J. McGinn Jr. described Corey as a "person of interest" in the homicide of Darlene L. Haynes, who was found Monday wrapped in a comforter in a closet of her apartment. She was eight months pregnant, but her baby was missing.

He said police interviewed Corey and a man who was found with the baby in their possession in Plymouth, N.H., yesterday. He declined to identify the man and no charges had been filed against him last night. The charge of being a fugitive from justice is supported by probable cause alleging the kidnapping of the infant, he said.

"She is alleging that she gave birth to the child," Capt. McGinn said. He said within hours of the alleged delivery on Friday, Corey was out showing off the baby to acquaintances. He said she showed none of the physical signs of someone who recently delivered a baby and had told friends before the birth that she was pregnant. Some of them did not believe her, Capt. McGinn said.

Police also learned through speaking with acquaintances that after appearing with the baby, Corey was unable to breast-feed, another indicator, he said, that she was never pregnant.

The child, whom Corey named Alida, appeared to be in good health and was being evaluated at a New Hampshire hospital yesterday, police said.

The Union-Leader of Manchester, N.H., is reporting that the baby is at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. The paper said the woman and the baby had been staying at a shelter on Highland Avenue in Plymouth. The baby appeared to be in good shape, in diapers and fed, the paper said, citing emergency workers.

Corey told workers at the shelter that the girl was six days old and identified herself as the mother but had no information on the child, according to the paper.

Corey was arrested as she tried to leave the shelter with the infant after workers alerted police and a nurse began photographing the baby with her cell phone, the report said.

The development came late yesterday afternoon after investigators spent several days searching for the missing baby. Detectives checked with area hospitals and other agencies where a baby could be dropped off, but did not find it.

Haynes has three other children. One of them, an 18-month-old girl, had been living with Haynes.

Alison Goodwin, spokeswoman for the state Department of Children and Families, said the girl is now in the agency's custody and a petition for custody was filed in Worcester Juvenile Court.

Corey will be arraigned today in New Hampshire on the fugitive from justice charge.
