Default Engine Questions

So I am new to this whole whole truck thing. I own a 1976 f100 XLT and I'm not sure what size engine it has and what it is good for. Some people have said its a 460 and others had said its a 400. My question is how can I tell the difference?

Unless it's been swapped, it's not a 400. The V8's available on the 1976 F100 are the 302, 360, 390, and 460. Here is a link to our VIN decoding thread:
