Default hot engine backfiring through exhaust under load goine up hill

Hi I have a 1964 Mercury M100 with an 223 six and three speed trany. Today after being out and about for awhile, and starting up a good grade the engine started to back fire through the exhaust and it lost power fast.
But it did recover and got us home.
Any thoughts on what it could be would be appreciated. Thanks Doug

Check the spark plugs, plug wires, rotor, and cap. In other words, it's probably time for a tuneup.
