Yeah, sad part is he told me that was his cost and he wasn't charging me anything over that, except for labor of course. Oh well, if the sensor does the trick, I'm happy. But if not, I'm just gonna order the VCT from Ford and put it in myself. Appreciate the info and the clear pics.

Man .. this was a great post!!

Pete or anyone..

My 2009 4.6L 3V XLT makes a rattling sound at low rpm. The sound is sorta like not having the proper valve lash. No noticeable problems from the engine. Just sounds funky.

Know what I mean? It just sounds - not right.

I have read articles where Ford denounced the problem and some articles where Ford made changes. The real question is - Is this normal for these VCT modular motors?

Thanks ahead of time brothers.

that rattle or diesel sound is associated to the 'cam phasers'
which does not throw a code/illumination of the CEL

That sound blows my mind.
My uncles 5.4 sounds like a diesel at idle with less than 50k miles and ford says it's fine.
Btw its an 04 idk if that means 2 or 3 valve.

the 2004 5.4 in the F150 had 3 valves
in late 2004 the 4.6 engine had 3 valves and was added to the 2005 F150 they could also be had with 2 valves untill 2008
the E series Van engines 4.6 & 5.4 have 2 valves

corrections welcomed
